Fine double cased verge watch with Repoussé scene by David Hubert

A very fine, English Repoussé double cased verge pocket watch with quarter repeater “Allegory of Maritime Trade – Neptune and Mercury“, circa 1730.
Two cases:
– Outer case – gold, Repoussé decoration: an allegory of maritime trade with Neptune, god of the sea with his trident, sitting in a large shell drawn by hippocampi. He is accompanied by Mercury, god of trade with his winged hat and herald’s staff. Four symmetrically arranged cartouches with chased figural representations of the four seasons; openwork bezel with floral ornamentation, large outer hinge.
– Inner case – gold, around the edge openwork decoration with engraved mythical creatures, imaginary birds, flowers and scrolls. Cartouche with an engraved view of a town; rear bell, signed and numbered dust cover.
Signed enamel dial with radial Roman hours and paste-set Louis XV hands. Fine full plate movement, keywind and signed, with applied engraved ornaments, chain/fusee, two hammers, baluster movement pillars, three-arm brass balance, pierced engraved balance cock with shell decor and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

Baillie’s “Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World” David Hubert is recorded as an important watchmaker working in London around 1714-1748. In 1743 Hubert became a master of the Company of Clockmakers; he was succeeded by Joseph Barnes in circa 1747.
