Gilt brass watch in a protecting fish skin case by Henry Grendon
–
A rare English octagonal shape verge pendant watch crafted from rock crystal, gilded brass, circa 1640
This exceptional timepiece from the 17th century boasts an octagonal gilt brass and partly blued full plate chain fusée movement, complete with a verge escapement. The intricate silver dial is adorned with beautifully engraved leaves and flowers, featuring radial Roman hours, half-hour markers, and a single steel hand. The outer case of this watch is oval in shape and covered in fish skin, a material often used in the 17th century for its durability and unique texture. The case with the silver knobs provide additional protection for this exquisite piece. Crafted by the esteemed watchmaker Henry Grendon, a member of the British Clockmakers’ Company in 1640, this timepiece bears his signature on the back plate of the movement, reading Henry Grendon at ye Exchange Fecit. Accompanied by a paper label on the interior of the outer case, marked On loan from Dunn Gardner —18, and marked 68 in pencil.
