Brass ship’s chronometer in a mahogany box by Barraud
–
An English ship’s chronometer with 56-hour power reserve and auxiliary compensation balance with correcting weight, circa 1859.
The case is a mahogany box with inlaid handles, brass inlays, brass gimbals and a bowl. The dial is silvered, signed and numbered, with applied specification ornaments, inlaid Roman numerals, and gold spade hands. And the brass movement has moulded pillars, chain/fusee, auxiliary compensation balance with one trapezoidal weight, two regulating screw nuts, two screws and Barraud’s legendary correcting weight, free-sprung blued helical balance spring, and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.
