Silver repoussé clock watch by Joseph Martineau
–
An English silver pair cased repoussé verge pocket watch with date, circa 1740. The watch features a gilded full plate movement with verge escapement, a pierced and engraved balance bridge, and fusee and chain. It is signed by Martineau, London. The silver champlevé dial has Roman numerals, half hour divisions, Arabic outer numerals, an arcaded minute track, and an aperture for the date at IV. It also bears the Martineau signature. It has two cases: a plain silver inner case and a silver outer case with a repoussé design depicting a female figure being offered a ring and necklace. The outer case is signed by Mauris Fecit, and the inner case has a marker’s mark F.S. surmounted by a crown.

Diameter: 54 mm

Signed: Martineau, London

The movement is operational. The dial shows tarnishing and scuffs throughout. The case has several dents on the inner side, and while the repoussé is rubbed, it maintains good definition.

Joseph Martineau, an English clockmaker, was born around 1675. Originally a French Huguenot, he relocated to London and worked at Saint Martin in the Fields, Middlesex. In 1716, he married Marie Magdelene Fermignac (circa 1675–1750) at Allhallows, London Wall. Marie Magdelene had previously been married to Jean Cazalet at Threadneedle in 1703. Joseph and Marie Magdelene had four known children: Joseph, Samuel, Magdelaine, and Louise Francoise. Their son Joseph may have also pursued watchmaking, known as Joseph Martineau (2). Joseph Martineau Sr. held the title of watchmaker to the king.
–
Clocks crafted by Joseph Martineau Sr. are displayed in several museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Mathematical Physical Salon in Dresden.
–
The exact date of Joseph Martineau’s death is unknown, but his will was published on January 22, 1760.

Signed: Martineau, London
