Gold and enamel badge-shaped watch by Nicholas Vallin
–
An English gold and enamel pendant watch in the form of a badge of the Order of the Garter, circa 1600.
This watch is designed as the ensign of the English Order of the Garter. The watch’s gold enamelled and repoussé case features Saint George fighting the dragon, and the band is enamelled with the order’s motto: HONI.SOIT.QVI/ MAL.Y. PENSE. The dial is gold and partly enamelled, decorated in multiple colours against a red background. The chapter ring is blue with gold enamel Roman numerals, and the double-ended floriated hand is made of steel. The movement is a gilded brass and steel full plate with a pierced and engraved balance cock, an engraved plate decorated with foliage and angels, rounded baluster pillars, fusee and gut line, ratchet and click set up, and a large bow-shaped spring. The movement is signed by N. Vallin.

Its function as a timekeeper would have been incidental to its function as a jewel required to be worn by a knight of the order as part of his daily dress.
