A large French 18 carat yellow gold minute repeating keyless pocket watch with chronograph, circa 1910. Sold by M. Tripet, Toulouse, on May 23rd, 1910 to Auguste Chalon for 425 Francs. A polished case, both covers with foliate engraved monogram AC, olive shaped button at 2 for the chronograph and a hinged gold cuvette. White enamel dial with Arabic numerals, outer minute track and outermost fifths of a second division, inner red 24 hour numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and gold spade hands. Frosted gilt movement, 19 jewels, straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, centrifugal governor, index regulator, repeating on gongs activated by a slide on the band. Case numbered.

The French company LIP, based in Besançon, was founded in 1867 by Emmanuel Lipmann (1844-1913). It was originally a simple watchmaker’s workshop set up by Lipmann, who came from Alsace, but the brand name Lip was first mentioned in 1896.
