A rare French 18K pink gold, silver and enamel open faced verge pocket watch with stone setting, circa 1770.
Two-coloured case, on both sides in silver set stones, the pendant with French punches, the back with a polychrome enamel painting over engine-turning. White enamel dial with radial Roman hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals, subsidiary dial for the seconds and exceptionally fine stone set silver hands. Thin verge movement. Dial and movement signed.

Jacques Jérôme (also Gérante) Gudin was born in Paris in 1732 as the son of Jacques Gudin and Henriëtte Le Noir. She was the daughter of jeweller Pierre Le Noir and sister of Jean-Pierre Le Noir. He became a master watchmaker on 12 May 1762, and from then on, he was based on the Quai des Orfevres. In 1783 he moved to Rue St Honoré. Jacques Jérôme signed his watches with ‘Gudin fils’ and ‘Gudin’. He worked together with Jean Baptiste André Furet (Furet) for several years.
