Unsigned gold and enamel verge watch
–
A rare gold French double dialled verge watch with calendar, circa 1770. This watch has a gilded movement with a verge escapement, fusee and chain, cylindrical pillars and a regulation arm to the movement’s perimeter and it is visible beneath the time dial. It has two dials. The first dial is white enamel with Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute ring, filigree hands and an aperture for winding at 3 o’clock. The second dial has a central aperture for moon phases and concentric rings with indications for months and their lengths. Additionally, it has ruling planets representing days of the week with pink polychrome enamel painted symbols, an outer date ring and three turned hands for the indications. The watch case is made of gold and the bezels have scalloped edges. It also features a diamond set thumbpiece and a diamond set pendant.

This particular watch has a more intricate astronomical dial than the one on lot 72. It displays not only the date of the month but also the names of the months, their durations, and the days of the week, which are represented by the corresponding ruling planet symbol in red enamel. Additionally, it shows the phases of the moon.

The dial has some visible hairlines and has undergone significant restoration or re-enamelling, specifically on the lower left side of the time dial and the lower third of the calendar dial. Additionally, the cover appears to be dirty and tarnished. Lastly, the movement is not working.
