Gold quarter repeating watch by Leroy
–
An unusual French gold oval quarter repeating watch with visible balance Circa 1830. The watch features a gilded movement with a cylinder escapement, polished skeletonised bridges for the going and repeating trains, a gilt standing barrel, and two serpentine gongs. It has a gilded engine turned dial with two apertures for a visible twinrimmed balance, an aperture above to partially reveal the movement, accompanied by a white enamel chapter ring, Arabic numerals, and an outer minute ring. The gold polished ovalform case has rounded sides, a plunge pendant, and a catch to the left of the pendant for opening the back. It includes a gilt metal cuvette with apertures and directional features for winding and handsetting, signed and numbered Leroy, Palais Royal CAB.

The engine turning on the dial plate exhibits a slight linear kink towards the bottom and a small hole near the border on the lower right side. There is a light scratch extending from the dial screw at the lower right side. The white enamel chapter ring displays three hairline cracks and some wear and repair to the inner metal ring. The case is in polished condition and bears a French control mark for Paris ‘petite recense’ dating from 1819-1838. The movement is functioning, but the repeating function is somewhat sluggish.
