Gold, silver open faced cylinder watch

A fine and rare, large French, silver and 18k gold montre de souscription pocket watch with ruby cylinder escapement, circa 1804. Sold to the Comte de Zamoyski, Brumaire. An Empire case by Joly with master mark, gold bezels, coin-edge band, engine-turned back with central translucent blue enamel Z within a translucent blue enamel circle, loose ring pendant.

White enamel dial by Borel, Breguet numerals, outer divisions for the five minutes, quarter and half-hours, secret signature below 12. Blued steel souscription hand. Gilt brass movement, souscription calibre with central barrel wound from the front or back, overhanging ruby cylinder escapement, three-arm plain brass balance, pare-chute on the top pivot, flat balance spring, bimetallic temperature compensation curb on the index regulator. Dial and movement signed.

The Zamoyski family settled in the 15th century at Laznin in the Mazovia area of Poland. The knight Tomasz Lazninski bought an estate there called Stary Zamosc and his sons Florian and Maciej thus began to use the name Zamoyski The Coat of Arms of the Zamoyski family is the Jelita. The family received the title of Count in the year 1778. The Zamoyski family has exerted a vast influence on Polish society, economy, culture and politics for over 400 years. The Zamoyski family has also played an important role in the military history of Poland. Stanislaw Zamoyski (1775-1856) was the son of Andrzej Zamoyski and Konstancja Czartoryska. A prominent statesman and patron of the arts, he married Princess Zofia Czartoryska. In 1817 he built the Zamoyski Library in Warsaw.
