Gold diamond set double dialed pocket watch
–
A fine and very rare, thin French 18 carat gold and diamond set double dialed calendar pocket watch made by Jean-Antoine Lépine in Paris, circa 1780. The gilt brass full plate movement with cylindrical pillars, a spring barrel, cylinder escapement, three arm brass balance, blued steel flat balance spring and an index regulator. The case has a rope twist bezel, a glazed aperture on the back with an engine turned and rope twisted border, and a diamond set thumb piece. The white enamel dial features the days of the week, including their corresponding planetary symbols, and the date from 1 to 31, a blued steel hand for day indication and a gold hand for the date. Movement signed.

–
This double dialed watch, which appears to be unique in the work of Lépine, is not recorded in Adolphe Chapiro’s “Jean-Antoine Lépine, Horloger (1720-1814)”.
–
Lépine was the first watchmaker in France to use Arabic numerals for the hours instead of the traditional Roman markers. This watch is a good example of this new style of dial.
–
The calendar work is driven by a pinion mounted on the extended center wheel pivot, which in turn drives two wheels with vertical pins to move the calendar hands.
