Pocket watch with three different gold colours
–
A very fine verge watch with relief case & stone setting in old watch box, made by Frères Esquivillon & De Choudens who probably operated in Genève and Paris in respectively Switzerland and France, circa 1800. The open faced gold case has a fantastic quality with three different gold colours, high relief with blossoms and leaves, extremely rare stone setting and imitations of rubies and opals. The white enamel dial has an outer ring with black Arabic numerals for the hours and filigree Breguet steel hands. The movement is numbered and has a verge escapement.
Dial and movement signed.

Frères Esquivillon & Dechoudens
Geneva watchmaker Jacques Dechoudens (1728-1801) and brothers Joseph Esquivillon (1714-1798), Jean François Esquivillon (1733-1813) and Gédéon-François Esquivillon (1717-1799) founded a workshop in Paris which produced high quality verge pocket watches. Esquivillon & De Choudens was a French clockmaking and watchmaking firm based in Paris during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were known for producing high-quality pocket watches, often with elaborate cases and decorations. The firm produced a variety of pocket watches, including ones with gold and enamel cases, as well as diamond decorations. Their watches were highly sought after by wealthy collectors and nobility at the time. Esquivillon & De Choudens was in operation for over 60 years, from around 1765 to 1830, indicating their success and reputation in the French watchmaking industry during that period.
