Pocket watch with “Wandering Automaton”
–
A large and significant verge watch with a painted enamel dial and a “Wandering Automaton”, made in Switzerland, circa 1800. The watch features an 18 carat gold case and an enamel dial decorated with three finely painted scenes depicting, at 12 o’clock, two children, probably a boy and a girl, with a dog; at 3 o’clock, a woman seated in a grassy landscape with a dog; and at 9 o’clock, a stone bridge beside a tall, narrow clock or bell tower. Beneath the upper scene is an aperture displaying a wandering automaton, in which gilt figures move at one second intervals, depicting a farmer or shepherd and his sheepdog driving a procession of animals, including a donkey, a horse, a cow, and a goat. The off center dial at 6 o’clock features an outer chapter ring with Arabic numerals for the hours and quarter hours, an inner date track with Arabic numerals for the days of the month and a mixed set of hands. The full plate movement is fitted with a verge escapement and the wandering automaton mechanism.
