Gold watch in case with concealed hinges

A very rare open faced precision pocket watch made for the American market by Grünsche Uhrenfabrikation Grün und Assmann in Glashütte, Germany, circa 1895. The numbered case of this watch, crafted from 14 carat gold, has concealed hinges and a monogram on the back. The white enamel dial has stylized black Arabic hours, an outer minute track, outermost gold Arabic five minute numerals, a sunk center, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and fine blued steel spade hands. The numbered precision movement is equipped with an extremely rare quality 1A lever escapement, screwed gold chatons, a gold Grossmann moustache lever, gold escape wheel, fine adjusting device and it features an inscription.
The dial and case are signed.

These watches are very rare because they were only produced in Glashütte from 1894 to 1897 and were intended for the American market. They came from a collaboration between Paul Assmann and Dietrich Grün.

The Assmann – Grün collaboration
In 1894, Dietrich Grün, his son Frederick and Paul Assmann started a collaboration in Glashütte, Germany. They traded under the name Grünsche Uhrenfabrikation Grün und Assmann. The American firm established in Columbus, Ohio, that same year was known as D. Gruen & Son.
