Pope Pius VI, born Giovanni Angelo Braschi in Cesena, Italy, on December 25, 1717, and Count di Falcino since 1759, was pope from February 15, 1775, until his death on August 29, 1799, in Valence, France. He is best known as the pope who opposed the French Revolution, which led to his deposition as the world’s monarch and his imprisonment and deportation to France.
