Pocket watch with prevision lever escapement
–
An important watch with a perpetual calendar and moon phase, the movement was made by J. Assmann Deutsche Anker Uhren Fabrik in Glashütte, Germany, circa 1893. The numbered silver case was probably made by Urania Watch Co. in La Heutte, Switzerland, and features gold hinges. The enamel dial has an outer minute and hour track with Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and moon  phase indicator at 6 o’clock, a date display at 3 o’clock, a display of the days of the week in French at 9 o’clock, a multi tiered register combining the months and leap year cycle at 12 o’clock, and blued steel hands.

The numbered, exceptionally rare precision movement is fitted with a quality 1A Glashütte lever escapement, a perpetual calendar and moon phase, screwed gold chatons, a gold lever, a gold escape wheel, a fine adjustment and a diamond end stone.

The case and movement bear matching numbers, and the case, dial, and movement are all signed.

–
This is one of the rarest Glashütte pocket watches with six complications, amongst which a genuine perpetual calendar and a moon phase and age indicator.

It is presumed that the watch, which was created around 1893, was originally sold with a valuable gold case. Said case was probably sold during the First World War. This was a common occurrence at the time.

It remains a mystery why, around 1915, the current case for the rare movement was created by the Urania Watch Co. and Uhrenfabrik Union Glashütte was the house that officially commissioned and completed the watch’s assembly rather than Assmann in Glashütte.

Signed: J. Assmann Glashütte I/Sa (dial and movement)
