William Ilbery (1780-1839) and his son, along with James Cox, perhaps the most famous of London makers associated with Chinese export watches. Watches by Ilbery can be found in all the major museums. Ilbery also had an address in Fleurier, Switzerland, which is where the ebauches(rough movements) probably originated, as well as an office in Canton from where the watches were retailed in China. See the gold and enamel cased watch by Ilbery, No 2394, at the London Museum – note the hands. Note also the date given to No 2394, which is circa 1800.
