A very early French silver verge pocket watch in marvellous condition, circa 1650. Full plate fire gilt movement, pierced and engraved cock, foot fusee and gut line, worm and wheel set-up, two-arm steel balance. An exquisite gilt and silver, floral ornamented dial, the symbols for the months and weekdays in French and as finely engraved as the expressive faces of the phases of the moon, a small aperture above for the indication of the months and number of days in a month, a wedge-shaped aperture underneath indicating the seasons with an engraving, a wedge-shaped aperture under the centre for the days of the week with an engraving of the ruling planet and the names of the planets, the chapter ring on the left is for the date, the one on the right for the moon phases and the one in the lower part of the dial for the time indication. The case is engraved with foliage and flowers. Altogether this timepiece is a striking piece of technical and artistic excellence.
