A Swiss 18 carat gold open faced lever pocket watch, circa 1870. Lever movement, manual winding. White enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes. Case engraved by Nicolas Marie Gatteaux, snap-on back, the inside engraved Jetton de la Reine 1774. Case numbered and signed N Gatteaux F, movement signed.

Nicolas Marie Gatteaux (1751-1932) was a French engraver known for his work of commemorative medals. His work included important figures and events during his lifetime, including Napoleon Bonaparte and the coronation of Louis XVI. This piece bears a token made for use during the reign of Marie Antoinette, and is stamped 1774 to commemorate the year Antoinette became Queen of France.
