Gustav Eiffel (1832-1923) was a French civil engineer and architect. In 1884, he began studying towers and in 1885 he designed the interior workings for the Statue of Liberty, which was to be a gift symbolising international friendship between France and the United States. He is best known for the world famous Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, France. Today, the Eiffel Tower stands as the most famous French monument and some believe that Eiffel’s innovative design prepared the world for modern skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. This watch was given by Gustav to his grandson Jacques Eiffel as a symbol of his great affection.
