Gilt and enamel pair cased watch by William Carpenter

An oversized English gilt and enamel pair cased verge pocket watch with stoppable jumping 1/5 seconds and lunar calendar made for the Chinese market, circa 1780. Full plate verge movement. Regulator style white enamel dial, outer Arabic minutes, eccentric hour chapter ring with Roman numerals at 12, Arabic auxiliary seconds at 3, subsidiary chapter ring with Arabic numerals indicating the ages of the moon at 9 and gold hands. The outer case with a polychrome enamel portrait of a lady, the inner case with a second polychrome enamel portrait of a lady, both rims engraved. Cuvette and movement signed and numbered.

William Carpenter, London, born 1770 and died 1805, was known for making watches featuring jumping seconds, usually intended for Eastern markets. His dials were always designed to be visually interesting with a variety of complications. There are examples of clocks and watches by William Carpenter at the Palace Museum, Beijing.
