Gilt centre seconds musical automaton by Reuge

A Swiss gilt metal open faced musical centre seconds keyless lever automaton pocket watch with alarm, circa 1980. Gilt lever movement, 17 jewels, monometallic balance. A gilt cuvette. The polychrome painted dial depicts a couple courting against a landscape background, an eccentric white enamel time display with Breguet numerals and centre seconds, an applied gilt automaton of a gentleman on horseback with a dove on his moving arm, the horse moving its head to drink the water from the animated water pumped by a lady. The case with a milled band,  a musical trophy and foliage engravings on the reverse, alarm setting at 11 o’clock. Dial signed, cuvette signed and numbered. Comes with a Reuge Certificate, the Instruction Manual and a key.

The origins of Reuge date back to 1865 when Charles Reuge set up a musical pocket watch shop in the Swiss Mountain town of Sainte-Croix. By 1886 his son, Albert Reuge opened a music box workshop, the company experienced success and their mechanisms were to be found in a range of products such as powder compacts and cigarette lighters. By 1930 Guido Reuge had built the Reuge factory and he guided the company for over 60 years. Today Reuge retains its historical elements still producing singing birds but moving with the times, their music boxes today come in traditional but also modern and innovative designs.
