A fine and rare French gold souscription à tact pocket watch, circa 1821. Sold to Mr. Le Comte de Bathyany on 10 November 1821 for 1800 Francs. Gilt brass souscription calibre with central barrel, overhanging ruby cylinder escapement, plain three-arm balance, parachute suspension.
Small eccentric silver engine turned dial, single blued steel hand and Arabic numerals for minutes. Engine turned case, gold touch pieces to the band, glazed aperture to the rear for minute dial, white enamel chapter ring with Breguet numerals, revolving gold a tact arrow, the tip with circular aperture. Dial and cuvette signed.

This watch was exhibited at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 2004 and illustrated in the catalogue exhibition, Breguet in the Hermitage, Slavia, p. 34. Batthyány is the name of an old distinguished Hungarian Magnate family. The Count Lajos Batthyány de Németújvár was the first Prime Minister of Hungary. He was born in Pressburg (modern Bratislava) on 10 February 1807 and was executed by firing squad in Pest on 6 October 1849, the same day as the 13 Martyrs of Arad. The Count Batthyány was part of the delegation to the Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria and was described as a ‘very capable leader’.
