An English 18 carat gold half hunting cased keyless pocket watch in commemoration of Admiral Sir Henry Fairfax made by Dent in London, Birmingham hallmarked for 1898. Gilt ¾ plate English lever movement with cut and compensated bimetallic balance. White enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued steel double spade hands. Polished hinged case with a Roman numeral chapter on the front and a monogram to the reverse, the cuvette with a commemoration engraving. The inscription on the cuvette reads In memory of Admiral Sir Henry Fairfax K.C.B. 20 March 1900. Case stamped J.R., dial and movement signed and numbered.

Sir Henry joined the navy in 1850 and throughout his career led an astronomical expedition to Kerguelen, commanded HMS Monarch in the Anglo-Egyptian War and was a Naval Aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria.
