A sphygmometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. It is believed that whilst visiting his doctor, Charles-Auguste Heuer, son of Edouard Heuer, felt that the process of having his blood pressure taken was slow and inefficient. As such he looked to invent a new instrument which would take reliable prompt readings. The design is believed to have been patented by the Lippmann Brothers in the early 20th Century with the understanding that Heuer would be the manufacturers. The dial graduations have been calculated on the basis of twenty beats. The chronograph is started, twenty beats counted and it is at this point that you have your heartbeats per a minute rating.
