Silver oval verge watch by Samuel Linaker
–
A unique English silver oval Puritan verge pendant watch, circa 1630.
This antique watch is a true masterpiece of horology, crafted by the skilled hands of Samuel Linaker, an esteemed watchmaker who was active in the early 17th century. The watch features a gilded brass and steel full plate movement and a pierced and florally engraved balance cock. The plain flat steel balance, wheel and click set-up, and gut line fusee are all testaments to Linaker’s expertise in watchmaking. The watch boasts a plain silver dial with Roman radial hours, a half-hour track, and a single steel hand. The simplicity of the dial design is a striking contrast to the intricate details of the movement and case. The plain silver case adds to the understated elegance of the watch.
The movement’s back plate is signed by Linaker himself, with the inscription Sa: Linaker / fecit, which translates to made by Samuel Linaker. The interior of the pair case is marked in pencil with the number 56 a.
