Fire gilded oignon watch

A rare French fire gilded oignon pocket watch made by Louis Foullé in Paris, circa 1710. An early, signed verge movement with unusual silver decoration. White enamel dial with radial Roman hours, outer minute track with Arabic five minute numerals and fine iron hands. The chased and engraved case with a high relief depicting a mythological scene with a chariot on the back, the rim with the representation of various mythical creatures, portraits and masks. Oignon watch
A watch style made in France in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Its thick, bulbous form is reminiscent of an onion. Most pieces feature a chased brass case, occasionally in silver and, on rare occasions, gold. In later centuries, oignon watches became a familiar and ironic term for a large, thick watch.
