A fine, heavy, Scottish gentleman’s pocket watch with English lever escapement, circa 1875.
18 carat gold polished case, gold dome with dedication engraving: “Presented to Dr. Daniel Resident Surgeon Leith Hospital by the Officers & Constables of the Leith Police Force the Officials of the Sheriff Court House Edinburgh and a number of his Friends on the occasion of his leaving the Hospital 19th November 1875″ and with case maker’s punch mark “AS” (Alfred Stram). Enamel dial with radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds and gold spade hands. 3/4 plate movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, chatoned and signed, with chain / fusee and a gold screw compensation balance.

James Whitelaw junior was born in Edinburgh around 1800. He was the son of James Whitelaw senior and nephew of David Whitelaw. James Junior worked at 30 West Register Street from 1865 to 1895.
