Pink gold ankerchronometer watch by J. Calame Robert
–
An early pink gold precision Ankerchronometer pocket watch signed J. Calame Robert, circa 1890. This watch has a 14K pink gold engine-turned case. The inside is signed and numbered, and both lids are made of gold. The movement is an exquisite Ankerchronometer of very fine Swiss quality with a chronometer balance, screwed gold chatons, and wolf’s toothing. Both the case and movement have the punch of James Calame-Robert La Chaux-de-Fonds. The dial is enamel and has Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals, a subsidiary dial for the seconds, and pink gold hands. This watch is in working order and is in very nice condition.

James Calame Robert, a Swiss watch manufacturer
In Kathleen H. Pritchard’s book Swiss Timepiece Makers 1775 – 1975, the Swiss watch manufacturer Jules Calame-Robert is mentioned. The book calls the company James Calame-Robert, but it is usually denoted as Js in archives and signatures. Calame-Robert or J. Calame-Robert. However, in La Fédération Horlogere of January 16, 1896, the company is definitively named Jules Calame-Robert. There may have been an error in Pritchard’s account that continues to be perpetuated today. The El Aguila brand was also transferred to Courvoisier Freres on March 7, 1892.
