Gold watch monogram, coronet and coat of arms

A rare Swiss 18 carat gold minute repeating hunting cased keyless pocket watch with chronograph, circa 1880. Made for the Marquis D’Auxy. A polished case, hinged gold cuvette, the front cover with applied gold monogram “AN” beneath a Marquis’s coronet. The back cover is engraved with the full coat of arms and the motto “Stirps Vera Nobilis Virtutum Opera” and “Et Toi Auxy“. White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, outermost fifths of second divisions with Arabic five-second numerals, subsidiary seconds and gold spade hands. Nickel-plated movement, 31 jewels, counterpoised straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, Breguet balance spring, index regulator, repeating on gongs activated by a slide on the band. Case and movement numbered.

The French Marquisate of Auxy dates back to the reign of Charles VII and was granted to David, sire d’Auxy after the Battle of Agincourt. His battle cry was “et toi auxy!” which became part of the family’s motto and is engraved upon the present watch.
