Gold open faced keyless lever repeater watch
–
A fine Swiss 18 carat yellow gold open faced quarter repeater pocket watch made for the French retailer Coquillat in Commercy, late 19th century. It features a mechanical crown winding lever movement with a repeating complication striking the hours and quarters on internal gongs, activated by a slide mechanism on the caseband. The white enamel dial shows black Roman numerals for the hours, a fine outer minute track with red Arabic five minute numerals 5 to 60, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and elegant steel hands. The timepiece is housed in a smooth, round, 18 carat solid yellow gold open faced case with a plain, polished reverse back cover, a fluted winding crown, a sturdy suspension bow, and a solid 18 carat gold inner protective cuvette signed Coquillat à Commercy.

The firm Coquillat was a respected jeweller and watchmaker based in the historic commune of Commercy in northeastern France during the late 19th century. Like many high end French retailers of the era, they commissioned exceptional mechanical movements from top tier Swiss manufacturers housed in luxurious 18 carat solid gold cases. This timepiece showcases a sophisticated quarter repeating mechanism, a prestigious complication that audibly chimes the time on demand.
