Gold hunting cased keyless lever watch
–
A fine and rare Swiss 18 carat yellow gold full hunter pocket watch, made by International Watch Co. (IWC) Schaffhausen, circa 1975. It features a masterfully decorated gold plated mechanical crown winding bar construction lever movement, calibre 982V. The movement is entirely hand engraved with intricate floral and scrollwork motifs. It includes a screw Glucydur balance, a Breguet hairspring, a swan’s neck regulator, pressed chatons, 19 jewels, and heated blued screws, signed International Watch Co. The white enamel dial shows elegant black Roman numerals for the hours, a fine outer minute track with small black markers, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and sleek blued steel hands, signed International Watch Co., Schaffhausen.

The timepiece is housed in a substantial, nearly mint round three body, 18 carat solid yellow gold full hunter case with a smooth plain polished spring hinged front cover, a matching polished reverse back cover, and a solid 18 carat gold inner protective cover showing a brilliant perlage (engine turned circular graining) finish on the interior face alongside official 18K gold hallmarks. It is completed by a fluted yellow gold winding crown and a sturdy suspension bow. The watch is accompanied by its original heavy IWC wooden presentation box with a brass signature plaque.

The legendary Calibre 98 architecture is one of IWC’s absolute mechanical triumphs. It traces its prestigious DNA back to pocket watch movements designed in the 1930s and later modified to power the iconic Portuguese wristwatches. This exceedingly rare mid 1970s reference 5409 represents the ultimate artistic expression of that history. Instead of standard bridge finishing, the ultra luxurious Calibre 982V variant boasts a completely hand engraved gilt movement layout. This transforms the mechanical components into a breathtaking canvas of baroque artistry. Complete with its original wooden presentation box and remaining in pristine, nearly unblemished collector’s condition, it is a magnificent testament to modern Swiss haute horlogerie.
