Unsigned gold hunting cased keyless lever watch
–
A Swiss gold double dialled hunting cased keyless lever watch with simple calendar and moon phases, circa 1880. The watch features a nickel lever movement, jewelled to the centre, a bimetallic compensation balance, a blued steel spring with overcoil, and a date advanced via a lever set to the central bridge. It has two dials: a front white enamel dial with Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute ring, subsidiary seconds, and an aperture for moon phases; and a back calendar dial gilded with an Arabic date ring, an outer silvered ring for the day of the week, and an aperture for the month with its length. There is also an adjuster for the date beneath the bezel above the month aperture, and two rollers for manual adjustment of the month and day of the week beneath the bezel. The watch is numbered 51773.
–
The case is made of 14 carat gold and is polished, with the front featuring the arms of the House of Habsburg Lorraine beneath a crown and the armorials heightened with red and white enamel beneath a crown. It also has a slide for handsetting beneath the bezel, and the case has Swiss hallmarks for 14 carat gold and is numbered.
–
The calendar dial is a separate module hinged onto the backplate of the movement. The date indication is advanced automatically via a lever that engages with a pinion to the back of the dial plate. Additionally, the date can also be manually advanced via a lever set on the bezel. There are two rollers set on the edge of the bezel that allow the month to be manually advanced at the beginning of each month and the days of the week to be aligned with the correct dates for that month.

The movement is currently functioning, but it could benefit from servicing to address some dirtiness. The date is advancing, and the manual adjusters are working properly. The hands are setting correctly, and an additional adjuster slide is on the front bezel, presumably for the moon phases. However, while the moon phases appear to be advancing correctly with the hands, the disc is not adjustable manually. The time dial has some enamel repair near the top right of the subsidiary seconds, and the calendar dial may have been refreshed. The case is in polished condition.
