Silver verge open faced pocket watch
–
A remarkable silver enamel verge pocket watch with animated scene from the Garden of Eden: “The Temptation” circa 1810.
A silver pocket watch, case maker’s mark “ALI”, enamel dial, polychrome painted, full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, three-arm steel balance.
The dial with its exquisite polychrome enamelling shows a river landscape with trees and various animals in peaceful harmony: a stag, a billy goat, a lion, a duck, a peacock, a horse and a sheep. The creator of the scene took his inspiration from the description of paradise in the bible to paint this “fruitful and well-watered” Garden of Eden. A serpent circles the separate medallion at twelve, which shows Adam and Eve and the fall of man.
