Pink gold pocket chronometer by Girard Perregaux

A very heavy Swiss 18K pink gold hunting cased pocket chronometer with observatory bulletin made for the Spanish or South American market, circa 1880.
The case is on both sides engraved in taille-douce with stylized foliage and geometric patterns, masks and grotesques, a central escutcheon on the front cover. Silver stamped satiné dial with Roman hours, the centre and the rim with varicoloured gold scrolled floral decoration an outer minute track and subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Nickel-plated keyless-winding movement with going barrel, gold screwed chatons, pivoted detent escapement (a so-called à bascule), free-sprung spherical balance spring, compensated crank balance with gold and platinum poising screws and a blued steel cylindrical hairspring with terminal curves to prevent over banking (à renversement). The cuvette inscribed Chronomètre bascule Spiral Cylindrique à Renversement. Dial, case and movement signed.

Constant Girard, 1825-1903, changed his name to Girard-Perregaux after marrying Marie Perregaux, the daughter of a well-known chronometer maker, and established his reputation as a maker of precision watches. The company did business first with Peru and Chile and then with Argentina.
