Gold independent split seconds watch

A very fine rare and unusual large and heavy two-train, hunting cased, keyless, 18 Carat yellow gold independent split-seconds watch with 1/4 seconds ‘foudroyante’. Made by J(ules) Huguenin, Locle Switzerland Circa 1880. Four body, bassine et filets, engine-turned case with polished borders, reeded band, push-pieces on the band for the stop/start of each hand, a hinged gold cuvette and glazed gold rimmed cover over the movement.
White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, 1/5th seconds chronograph divisions, sunk 1/4 seconds diablo-tine and blued steel Breguet hands. Maillechort movement with Geneva striping decoration, double train with tandem winding, 25 jewels, straight-line calibrated lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring with over coil and independent split seconds train.
Dial and movement signed, case numbered.

Jules Huguenin lived and worked in Locle in Switzerland’s Jura Mountain area during the second half of the 19th century. He specialized in complicated watches with double trains, split-seconds chronograph watches and watches with a ‘foudroyante’ or ‘diablotine’ feature.
