A Swiss gentleman’s pocket watch with spring detent escapement, circa 1880.
Silver engine-turned case with a monogram on the engraved cartouche, and case maker’s punch mark PJ & Co. Signed enamel dial with Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds, and blued spade hands. Keywind, ground, rhodium-plated bridge movement with chain/fusee, pink gold train, screwed gold chatons, gold screw compensation balance, and blued helical balance spring.

The company W. Hoff & Fils was active as a watch manufacturer in La Chaux-de-Fonds around 1880. The company probably didn’t exist very long. At the time there was also the Gerome Hoff & Fils company in La Chaux-de-Fonds. There was also the watch manufacturer Jean Guillaume von Hoff (1808-1885) and Eugène von Hoff (1845-1889).
