Unsigned 18k gold repeating full hunter Carillon watch
–
A rare and unusual Swiss gold hunting cased quarter repeating carillon watch with seven hammers striking a series of gongs and playing the British National Anthem, circa 1922. So-called Hymne National. The watch has an unsigned frosted gilded movement with lever escapement, jewelled to the centre, a bimetallic compensation balance, seven polished steel hammers for minute repeating, and plays the British National Anthem, God Save the King/Queen, on a series of coiled gongs. It also features a silvered dial with black Breguet numerals, an outer minute ring, blued steel moon hands, subsidiary seconds, and a large kidney-shaped aperture partially revealing the action of the repeating work, marked Hymne National, Répétition Carillon à 7 Timbres.
–
The plain polished bassine-form 18k gold case has an olivette with protective shoulders to the right of the pendant, a gold pendant and bow, and a polished gold cuvette. It is marked with the maker’s mark R & S within a rectangular cartouche, Swiss hallmarks, a French import mark, and London import hallmarks for 1922. The back cover and cuvette are numbered 10591, while the front cover is numbered 591.

The watch has a quarter-repeating function with a romantic twist. Instead of the usual chimes, it plays the tune of “God Save the Queen,” the national anthem of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, through its gongs and hammers. The tune dates back to the 17th century and gained popularity in 1745 after being published in Theasuarus Musicus the previous year. Additionally, the semi-skeletonized dial allows the user to observe the repeating work in action.
–
The movement is running smoothly and consistently. The British National Anthem “God Save the Queen” is playing correctly, but it could benefit from tuning as it currently sounds dull and out of tune. The surfaces and screw heads are in good aesthetic condition. The dial is also in good condition. The case has some light scuffs and scratches, with some scratching around the case’s opening lips.
