Silvered metal open faced lever
–
A Swiss silvered metal oversized Art Deco pocket watch, made by Doxa Watch Company in Le Locle, circa 1910. An open faced, keyless pocket watch, the case back stamped with an allegory of work, Labor by Holy Frères, Saint-Imier, showing a blacksmith carrying a cogwheel near his furnace, in front of his anvil and hammer, compass and square, in an imaginary landscape showing a factory, an electric pole, a locomotive, a train, an automobile, an airship and a steamship, images of industrial and human progress, … if this idea was very beautiful before the butchery of the First World War, it is today a utopia in the age of global warming!
–
Silver stamped satiné dial with radial Roman numerals, the center and the rim with varicoloured gold scrolled floral decoration and frieze, subsidiary seconds at 6 and blued steel Spade hands. A silver plated movement, going barrel, straight line equilibrated lever escapement, uncut bimetallic compensated balance with poising screws and blued steel flat hairspring, polished steel index regulator. Signature on the cuvette.

The journey of DOXA started with Georges Ducommun in the small town of Le Locle in the Jura mountains, Switzerland. George was one of 13 children and only 12 years old when he began his apprenticeship with an established watchmaker in 1880. He had a temperament for hard work and discipline, combined with a passion for mechanical precision and beauty.
