Silver verge watch with the portrait of Cleopatra

A fine Swiss rare and unusual silver and enamel French-style Louis XIV oignon watch with mock pendulum, circa 1700. The case engraved with inhabited foliage, a finely painted on enamel plate with the portrait of Cleopatra set on the opening back, a fine polychrome enamel allegorical scene on the interior painted in the manner of Musard depicting a pilgrim waking Venus, while a Cupid points the time on a clock indicating that it is always time for love.

Silver champlevé dial, radial Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute ring and gilt brass pierced hands. Gilt-brass full plate French oignon-type movement with divided Egyptian pillars, fusee with a female winding hole on the dial side and chain, verge escapement with a plain brass three-armed balance, a silver mock pendulum set on the rim, silver French Louis XIV pendulum cock chased with birds and scrolled foliage. Dial and movement signed.

Although signed for London, this watch was made in Geneva. The counter-enamel depicting the waking of Venus is particularly well painted.
