In 1881, Achille Ditesheim founded a workshop with six watchmakers to establish pocket watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1886, the brothers Léopold and Isidore Ditesheim joined the Achille Ditesheim company. The company was now called LAI Ditesheim. LAI Ditesheim began developing wristwatches around 1900.
In 1905, a new production building was built and “Movado” (Esperanto: always on the move) was registered as the company name. 1912 Movado brought the Polyplan on the market in 1926, followed by the Etuiuhr Ermeto. 1924 Movado’s first agency opened in the United States (New York). Movado manufactured many different calendar watches, mostly in gold cases. Due to the cooperation with Zenith, the company headquarters were moved to Le Locle in 1971. Movado joined Movado Group, Inc. in 1983; in late 2003, it acquired the renowned manufacturer Ebel.
