Gold musical automaton calendar watch

A very fine and extremely rare English 18 carat gold open faced musical calendar automaton pocket watch playing two tunes made for the Chinese market, The Conductor, circa 1884. The first melody is La lle de Madame Angot from the opera by Charles Lecocq and the second melody is Rega nob Rang. Frosted gilt ½ plate movement, tandem winding with a mirror-polished click on top for two barrels, a screw compensation balance, brass barrel with steel pins and 34 vibrating blades, governor. A gold cuvette. White enamel dial with black Roman hours, outer gold minute dots with black Arabic five-minute numerals, centre seconds, two subsidiary dials for the indication of the day and date, an aperture for the polychrome enamelled automaton scene depicting a conductor and blued spade hands. A polished case with maker’s mark LW, a pusher for starting the musical movement at 9 o’clock, a slide for choosing a melody at 1.
