Silver pair cased verge pocket watch

A very rare, single-handed Dutch silver pair cased verge watch with early day & night indication, date and hour indication via rotating disc, circa 1730. Signed and numbered verge movement with worm setup between the plates, pierced and engraved bridge balance cock and pierced and engraved footplate, silver regulation disc with copper indicator.

Extraordinary high relief repoussé/champlevé dial, the silver Champlevé dial has retrograde Roman hours for night and day. In the upper half of the centre is a semi-circular opening showing the phases of the sun with an engraved gold sun on a silver disc or the moon phases with an engraved silver moon and stars on a black enamelled disc, which revolves once every 24 hours. When the sun disappears on the right side of the display, the moon appears on the left. The lower half of the centre shows Apollo in high relief with his cithara in the midst of finely engraved sunrays and clouds, very beautiful completely original condition, The blued day and night disc of this watch is particularly detailed and intricate.

Nicolaas Weylandt worked around 1720 in Amsterdam, where he died in 1756. In 1742 a register was drawn up “Kohier van the personal quota in Amsterdam”. He was then watchmaker on the Nieuwendijk. He paid a rent
of 470 florins, had a maid and an income of 1200 florins. He is an important watchmaker whose business was liquidated in 1756. An advertisement from that time reads “Sale, in Amsterdam on May 31 1756,
from a batch of watches of all kinds, as playing and striking, regal pocket watches, all bequeathed by the Kunstwerkman NicolaasWeylandt in his death house, Nieuwen Dijk at the Haarlemmersluis in Amsterdam”,
where he had his business from 1742 to May 8, 1756.
