An extremely rare French silver, gilt and enamel oval case presumably from the Blois School, circa 1650. A gilt body, the top cover decorated with multi-coloured enamel summer flowers, the inside reveals a scene showing a country inn, six small, applied oval cartouches decorate the edge and are filled with chased putto and motto ornamentation.

At the time Blois was a hub of the enamel arts as well as of watch- and clockmaking. The city gained its reputation during the reign of King Francis I (1515-1547). The painted enamel cases created by the Blois School were unique in their quality and beauty, they were held in great esteem and considered magnificent works of art.
