Gold open faced presentation watch

An English 18 carat gold open faced key wind pocket watch with power reserve indication made by A. & J. Smith in Aberdeen, London Hallmarked for 1869. The gilt ¾ plate movement with an English lever escapement, cut and compensated bimetallic balance and diamond end stone. White enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, power reserve indication at 12 and blued steel moon hands. The polished case is stamped J.V. and has a crest on the back from the Henderson Clan, the cuvette with a presentation inscription. Case numbered, movement signed and numbered. Accompanied by a fitted presentation box and the original winding key.

This timepiece was presented to John S. Henderson Esq in 1869 for his services as Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen.

The Aberdeenshire Horticultural Society was founded in March 1824 when a meeting of practical Gardeners was held for the purpose of forming themselves into a Society. In November 1863, it was announced that H.R.H. the Prince of Wales had agreed to become Patron of the Society and that the Society’s name was to be changed to the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen.
