Silver and enamel verge watch

A Dutch silver and enamel pair cased key wind pocket watch with calendar made by Paulus Braamer in Amsterdam, circa 1720. The gilt full plate movement with a fusee verge escapement, pierced and engraved balance bridge, and silver regulation. Silver champlevé dial with Roman hours alternating with half hour markers, an outer minute track, outermost Arabic five minute numerals, an aperture for the date above 6 o’clock, decorated center and gilt Louis XV hands. A polished inner case and foliate decorated outer with two profiles in relief, an enamel panel depicting a man and a woman. Dial and movement signed.

Paulus Braamer worked in Amsterdam in circa 1720. He partnered with his son Juriaan Braamer. Paulus was probably one of the most productive watchmakers of his time. His first watch dates from 1720. Braamer’s watches were often fitted with enamel by the Huaud brothers. After he died in 1770, his household goods contained fine standing watches. An advertisement of May 1, 1775, announced that the shop would be moved to the Kalverstraat, opposite.
