A very fine Swiss 14 carat rose gold hunting cased grande sonnerie quarter repeating pocket watch with quarter hour and hour self strike made by Henri Onésime Stauffer, circa 1905. Glazed bridge movement with two hammers and two gongs, the Swiss patent engraving 13896 Mécanisme de répétition et de grande sonnerie (Minute repeater and grande sonnerie mechanism), a piston tooth lever escapement and gold screw compensation balance. White enamel dial with Arabic hours, an outer minute track, outermost Arabic five minute numerals, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and fine hands. The plain case made by Les Fils de L. Braunschweig & Cie in La Chaux-de-Fonds and with the monogram CS on the front. Case numbered. Comes with the original presentation box.

Henri Onésime Stauffer‘s patent 13896 for a repeater with only one barrel for the movement and striking mechanism dates from 1897.

Stauffer was born in 1820 in Les Pont-de-Martel, Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

Around 1850, he founded a company to make complicated watches, primarily with repeaters and automatic chimes. He also acquired further patents in the USA. His patented watches with the 1776 movement bridges, the year of American independence, are well known.
