A very fine French gold open faced cylinder pocket watch, circa 1760. Hinged, frosted and engraved gilt skeletonized plate movement with cylindrical, fusee and chain, the barrel skeletonized, cylinder escapement, fine large three armed gold balance with perpendicular amplitude limiting pin on the rim, blued steel flat balance spring, index regulator on the edge, triangular single footed solid engraved cock. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer minute divisions with fifteen minute Arabic numerals and original gold Louis XV hands. Louis XV caseglazed, glazed on both sides, band engraved with a repeated anthemion pattern. Dial and movement signed.

Jean Arthur received master in 1757, he is recorded as working in Paris circa 1755-1810. There are 11 known watches by Jean Arthur and one clock, his work is very finely finished and he was an early and innovative user of the cylinder escapement.
