An elegant and rare, large, Swiss 18 Carat yellow gold keyless dress pocket watch, circa 1950. A polished and brushed case, inclined bezel, rounded band, U shaped bow with ball terminals, snap on case back. Brushed yellow gold dial with applied yellow gold baton indexes and Arabic 12 numeral, outer minute track, large subsidiary seconds and yellow gold baton hands. A rhodium plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, 17 jewels, straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with three adjustments, blued steel Breguet balance spring, swan neck micrometre regulator.
Dial, case and movement signed.

A well designed and sophisticated large dress watch of the very high quality one would expect from Gübelin. This watch is made more appealing by the yellow gold case, dial, indexes and hands, giving a very harmonious single tone to the entire watch.

In 1854, Jakob Josef Maurice Breitschmied opened a watchmaker’s shop in Lucerne’s Pfistergasse. One of his apprentices is Eduard Jakob Gübelin. Gübelin falls in love with Bertha Breitschmied, his master’s daughter. In 1886, the two entered into marriage. Their son, Eduard Moritz, sees the light of day the following year.

In 1899, Eduard Jakob Gübelin took over his father-in-law’s business and continued to work consistently to expand the family business. In 1903 he opened the premises of the new sale in the former Hotel Englischhof.

In 1912, Eduard Jakob’s son, Eduard Moritz, married Maria Schriber, a captain’s daughter. In 1919, he took over the company’s management from his father and expanded it in 1923 to become a jewellery business with his creations and a gemological laboratory.
