A rare Dutch pair cased verge pocket watch with outer repoussé case and mock pendulum, circa 1720. The watch has a silver Repoussé outer case that features a classical scene of soldiers and a family group with a child within an ornate border. The scene is signed Cochin – F(ec)it and has a case maker’s punch mark EC and a large lateral hinge. The inner case is made of silver. The enamel dial has radial Roman hours, Arabic minutes, and Louis XVI hands. The watch also has a fine full plate movement, which is key-wound and has applied decorations, fire-gilt, chain/fusee, baluster movement pillars, and a ring balance with a mock pendulum. The silver balance bridge is engraved with the personification of Cronus and the motto Le Temps Passe (Time flies).

This influential watchmaker has worked in Rotterdam for more than 50 years. Cornelis Uyterweer was Chief of the Guild many times, but even more important to mention is that he was the teacher of none other than Steven Hoogendijk.
–
Cornelis Uyterweer (1702-1782) was born in Rotterdam and was baptized there as the son of a clockwork maker and possibly also a blacksmith Pieter Uyterweer (1674-1710) and Maria Swaenhill (1666-1737). He still lived in the parental home in Westwagenstraat when he married Maria Magdalena van de Vijver (1707-1797) in Rotterdam on March 29, 1730, living in Botersloot. From this marriage, six children were born, of which four probably died young. His son Pieter Uyterweer later worked as a watchmaker with his father. At the death of mother Magdalena, only Pieter and oldest daughter Maria are still alive.
–
Cornelis Uyterweer was one of the leading Rotterdam makers of vest pocket watches and probably lived in the Hoofdsteeg since 1732. The house in Westwagenstraat, corner of Halve Maenstraat, was inhabited in that year by the family of Bastiaen van den Donker (1705-1778) and Cornelija (Kornelia) van Heukelom (? -1763). Between 1749 and 1768, Uyterweer was the captain of the St. Eloys or blacksmith’s guild, nine times to which the watchmakers also belonged. His son, Pieter Uyterweer, was also chief captain four times between 1775 and 1780. From Cornelis Uyterweer vest pocket watches are preserved in the Dutch Gold, Silver and Clock Museum in Schoonhoven, the Historical Museum in Rotterdam, Museum of the Dutch Clock in Zaandam, Museum Het Princessehof in Leeuwarden, Guildhall in London, the Musée d ‘ horlogerie du Locle Château des Monts in Switzerland, Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Italy, and the Musée du Louvre in France.
–
Cornelis Uyterweer died on May 18, 1782, and was buried on May 22 in the Great Church of Rotterdam.
